People prefer to stay home during New Year

VietNamNet Bridge - HCM City tourism companies say the number of people choosing to travel during New Year is 20 percent below their target.

Fiditourist Tan Dinh Travel Company said it had been hoping to sell 2, 000 foreign and 5, 000 domestic tours but it has yet to reach 80 percent of the number.

The tour operators blame the global financial crisis and the fact that New Year is too close to Tet this year.

According to them, many tourists have chosen to go to Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, or Cambodia instead of Thailand because of the political upheaval there. At home, Con Dao is the top destination.

Tour prices have risen just 5 to 10 percent compared to 40 percent last year, they say.

With the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism planning to run a promotional campaign from January to September, tour prices could fall further next year.
